This happens to me almost every time I work. There are these two women who work at the hospital. Every day they come and stand in line and every single time they don't know what to order. After a long debate between themselves while holding up the entire line, they share a single tall latte. What bugs me is that they order the same damn drink every single time. *sigh...
Oh another thing that grinds my gears [haha] is when people come up and order drip coffee. I love drip coffee and when I go out I usually order it too, but there's a freaking sign that says we do not serve drip coffee in the espresso stand. How can they miss seeing that sign! It's obtrusive and brightly colored. *sigh... Normally when people are told we do not sell drip coffee, they order americanos. However what the heck is up with people when told we do not have drip, they get white chocolate mochas, extra chocolate, extra whip and nonfat milk. How do you go from that plain coffee to the ticking heart attack/diabetes time bomb? And just because you drink it with nonfat milk does not make it okay to splurge on everything else.
Why is it that people are so indecisive? I know I'm indecisive too but at least I'll stand off to the side while wondering what to order before I get into line. I think our society is too structured. From birth to death, our lives locked in for us. It's like we are climbing a ladder. When we are born we mill around the bottom of the ladder until we have the self-awareness to start climbing (the age we start school) and if we don't continue to climb we are seen as socially inept. As children we are made to go to elementary school and for what? So we can go to middle school. Why do we go to middle school? So we can go to high school. Why do we go to high school? So we can go to college? Why do we go to college? So we can get a good job? Why do we get jobs? So we can support our families? And why must we do this? So we can send our children to school. I mean what the heck?
The only acceptable choices in life are the ones that let us climb this ladder. I've come to realize that it doesn't matter what major I choose or what job I get. It will only influence how fast I climb this ladder. A ladder I don't even know why I have to climb [well, I do but still...]. *sigh...
Since our lives are so rigid and structured I think people unconsciously try to be indecisive with trivial things just for the sake of being indecisive. The more indecisive you are, the more your trying to resist life's ladder. Just don't do it when I'm taking your drink order.
(btw.. I made the picture, except for the ladder)

So last night during my boredom stage I looked up jabbar on wikipedia. [I use wikipedia often and I consider it one of the best things ever made]. The name comes from a friend who thought jabba the hutt was actually jabbar. Anyways the definition of jabbar originated from the Arabic word jabbār which means a whole host of things depending on the connotation. It can be translated to "giant," "of exceeding strength," "haughty," "arrogant," or "ferocious."
As I saw this I couldn't help but laugh. I showed this definition to aforementioned friend and she cracked up too. These words are the exact opposite of me. Of course there have been times when I could be described as haughty or arrogant but for the most part I am not. I have a very introverted personality, unless I am in a situation where I simply do not care.
I realized that names are very much like clothing. You put on a certain name for certain circumstances much the way you dress for an occasion. Generally I am Sam to most people. To people of importance and limited connection like professors I am Samuel. To my parents I am "Yah!" and to my brother I'm simply "hey you". And to the people who reads this blog I am jabbar, a ferocious individual with a "smooth" writing style. [ha..ha..ha...]
On a rather different note I tried pulling the "craven morhead" joke to some people at church today. Unfortunately most people have already seen Saturday Night Live, however one person fell for it and it was glorious.
As I sit in front of my computer I realize there was no point in turning it on. The motions I follow everyday have become habitual and rather mundane. I have set up several bookmark tabs in my internet browser that I systematically check every time I turn on my computer and during various times of the day. After checking these I reach a metaphoric wall. I have no desire to do anything else. I suppose my problem is that I get bored very easily. After a short period of time I lose the will to continue whatever activity I was doing. Its not like I'm depressed. I don't feel sad or blue, rather I'm just bored.
Studying is a prime example. This morning I found myself sitting in a cafe near UW. The academic material I was reviewing had lost all appeal after a remarkably short time. I looked out the window and saw a weirdly shaped cloud. I immediately stopped studying to examine this cloud's peculiarity. I spent the remainder of the morning sipping coffee and staring at the sky. Its not like I get easily distracted. There were many potential interruptions that I dismissed as inconsequential while I was focused on school. But as I saw this cloud, I had to stop and stare. I was rather shocked to discover I spent nearly an hour doing what most would call nothing.
I came to realize that its not that I don't find anything worthwhile, its just that I dislike complexity. The normal routine of any typical individual is full of things that require too much thought. I guess this is why I spend so much time lounging in my brother's room doing nothing. Even my conversations hold no sophisticated value. I had a conversation with a friend from afar that was typically superficial and made me realize my outlook on life. Looking at the topics within the chat, I noticed that it was mainly comedic. There were no deep thoughts nor any philosophical discussion. The reason for this was me.
Is humor then mundane or complex? No, humor is very simple. If something strikes an individual as funny, it is humorous. I was watching clips of snl's celebrity jeopardy and I couldn't stop laughing. The sean connery impersonator is especially humorous to me. His line, "the day is mine!" causes me to literally laugh out loud. I find the simple yet vulgar jokes the funniest. Maybe that's why so much of my comments are sarcastic.
I've come to realize that I look for the quintessential elements of life. Anything else while sometimes necessary for survival is simply too troublesome. Simplicity is my saving grace. When trapped in this complex world and bored of it, the simple things in life like humor let me remain sane. After all its my life, and the day is mine!
